Meet Hum, a loving, 52-year-old mother of nine children who lives in Cambodia. She enjoys spending her days caring for her large family of children and grandchildren while listening to the radio, and also likes to listen to monks pray at the pagoda.
Hum has developed mature cataracts in both of her eyes. This occurs when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy which causes decreased vision and functional blindness. According to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Center, “Hum cannot see clearly and is unable to cook and look after her family and cannot go to the pagoda,” and “she also cannot watch TV.”
Hum is very concerned about her condition, and is having more difficulty doing her work on the farm and being able to see people’s faces.
For $225, we can fund Hum’s procedure to remove the cloudy lenses in her eyes and replace them with clear lens implants. This will greatly improve her vision within just one day after the surgery, and she will be able to return to the activities that she loves.
Hum wants to see clearly again so that she can return to her hard work in the farm fields, as well as visit the pagoda and join any ceremonies. After the surgery, she will have much more independence and also be able to more easily take care of her grandchild at home.
