Phal is a 66-year-old second-hand clothing seller from Cambodia. She has lived on her own since her husband died during the Khmer Rouge regime.
About ten years ago, Phal had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her left ear to perforate. For this reason, Phal experiences ear pain, tinnitus, and discharge. She cannot communicate clearly with others and she is in chronic pain. She has been buying medicine at the pharmacy to help manage her symptoms, but the cost is difficult for her and she is hoping to finally be cured of this condition.
Fortunately, Phal traveled to our medical partner’s care center to receive treatment. On December 15th, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her left ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $464 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care.
Phal said, “I hope my ear will improve and the tinnitus will finally stop after the operation. I especially want my hearing to improve.”

Phal underwent myringoplasty ear surgery so she can hear clearly.
Phal had a successful operation and she has returned home. Doctors will see her again in six weeks for her follow-up appointment. In the meantime, Phal has been advised to use the ear drops she has been provided with for the next two weeks in order to reduce any chance of further infection.
Surgery has relieved her of symptoms of her chronic ear infection and has finally eliminated her ear discharge and discomfort. Her procedure was important so that she does not risk further hearing loss and ear damage from her condition. She lives alone and is happy her hearing will improve so she can return to work.
Her sister shared, “We’re happy and thank you to the staff that she had surgery to stop ear pain, she has improved hearing and no more ear infection.”
