Sambath is a seven-year-old student from Cambodia. He lives in Phnom Penh with his parents and two younger siblings. His parents work in a grocery store to support the family. Sambath is in first grade and enjoys his math class and recess. In his free time, he likes playing with his friends and playing games on his mom’s phone.
Sambath was born with torticollis, a condition where the neck is twisted, causing the head to tilt at an angle. He cannot turn his head, experiences pain, and feels self-conscious at school.
Fortunately, our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is helping Sambath receive treatment. On November 11th, surgeons will perform a contracture release surgery to help improve his neck function and self-confidence. Now, he needs help to fund this $572 procedure.
Sambath’s father said: “After the surgery, I hope that my son will be able to turn his head more easily and have no pain, so he can grow healthy and focus on school.”

Sambath’s surgery was a success! This procedure will help improve the flexibility and movement of his neck. Before surgery, Sambath struggled to turn his head, experienced pain, and felt self-conscious at school. As he continues to heal from the surgery, he will gradually move his head more, which will reduce discomfort and allow him to participate in school and play activities with more confidence. Over time, with continued recovery and exercises, Sambath will be able to turn his head easily, look around without difficulty, and engage in daily activities comfortably – improving both his independence and quality of life.
Sambath’s father said, “We are very grateful for the surgery. Sambath is already moving his head more easily and feels less pain. We hope he will enjoy school and playing with his friends without worry.”
