This lovely lady is Catarina, a 62-year-old from central Guatemala.
Catarina has lived with uncontrollable diabetes for the last decade. Dr. Rohloff, a global health doctor at our partner organization in Guatemala, writes:
“Catarina come to us desperate. She has had uncontrolled diabetes for about ten years. Given lack of family support and income she has never been able to afford treatment. Symptoms have gotten to the point where she is constantly dizzy, losing weight with poor appetite, dehydrated, and in danger of dying.”
For $300, wecan help Catarina manage her diabetes. She will receive an endocrinology consultation, insulin treatments and weekly home visits from nutritionists and nurses. Additionally, she will receive ongoing, longterm followup.

Catarina has received clinical support to better manage and live with diabetes.
Things are going really well so far.
Here’s what Watsi’s medical partner had to say about how things have gone with her treatment and how she feels about it.
“Catarina’s numbers look really good. Her average glucose has gone from almost 400 to routinely under 200. Weight loss has stabilized, appetite is improved. Blood pressure is controlled. She’s no longer having the episodes of dizziness and dehydration. The team feels confident that, because of help from the Watsi network, Catarina was able to receive the timely, intensive interventions that she needed to stabilize her medical condition. She will of course need ongoing followup, but the hardest work is done, and we’ll continue to provide her with accompaniment going forward.
Catarina is deeply grateful for the generosity and support from the clinical team in Guatemala and the funding team from around the world! She was quite desperate when she came to us, and fearful, and now she has found new hope.”
