Meet Ismael, a 65-year-old from Guatemala whom some Watsi donors might remember. We helped Ismael about a year ago with a serious problem with urinary blockage (https://watsi.org/profile/12432a97680c-ismael). Since then, Ismael’s health has improved dramatically, and he has gotten his diabetes under control. Unfortunately, all the years of poor control have left their mark on his vision, which has deteriorated to the point where he is unable to get around on his own.
Ismael is a model patient at our partner hospital, Wuqu’ Kawoq. In addition to being extremely diligent with his diabetes medications, he is also a great source of encouragement to other patients. While waiting to be seen at the clinic, he is always sharing his story about his condition with other patients, encouraging them to take steps to improve their health. He has no family members and really relies on the clinic and staff for his support and health.
For $1,500, we can cover the cost of bilateral cataract surgery and bilateral photocoagulation. This will bring about improved vision for Ismael and stabilization of the retinal diabetic disease. He will have improved independence and safety from the reduced risk of falling in his home, where he lives alone. We’ve helped restore some of his health, let’s see this through all the way!
