Two-day-old baby Kevin was just born to his young mother in Kenya. Kevin was born with an occipital encephalocele, a large swelling on the back of his head.
“If not treated, Kevin may have mental and growth retardation, seizures, and uncoordinated movement of voluntary muscles,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF).
“Kevin’s mother lives with her parents and ten siblings in a traditional house in the Rift valley region of Kenya. They are all dependent on Kevin’s grandparents who are subsistence farmers and at times till their neighbor’s farms to earn a living,” explains AMHF.
To be healthy, Kevin needs an encephalocoele repair, a treatment that, at $780, his family cannot afford. AMHF hopes that “the timely repair of the encephalocele will reduce the chances of Kevin suffering mental and growth retardation.”
“I hope the growth can be removed and Kevin can be healthy,” his mother shares.
