Meet Houng! Houng is a 61-year-old woman from Cambodia. She is married with one daughter, and in her free time likes to watch local Thai dramas on TV.
Houng developed a cataract in each eye about five months ago, causing her blurred vision, burning, and tearing. This makes it difficult for her to see things clearly, do any work, and go outside on her own.
For $292, the Children’s Surgical Centre in Cambodia can perform a phaco procedure and intraocular lens implant, and Houng will be able to see clearly again.
Houng looks forward to healing. “I want to go outside by myself without needing to disturb another person to take care of me,” shares Houng.

Houng successfully received cataract surgery.
Houng’s eye cataract was successfully removed from her left eye and clear vision has been restored. Following the operation, she was given eye drops to reduce inflammation and fight infection. Houng went home after the first surgery and has yet to return to have the same operation completed in the other eye. Because returning to the clinic requires taking a day off from work and usually a family escort, she may have had trouble finding a day to come back. Also, because she left with clear vision in one eye, her problems with blurred vision are less of a burden making the second surgery a less immediate priority than the first. The second surgery will be free whenever Houng returns.
“I feel very happy that I can see everything clearly,” shares Houng. “I can do work easily go anywhere by myself. There’s no need to disturb others to take care of me anymore.”
