“Amina is a six-month-old who has had an abnormally large head since birth,” explains our medical partner, Edna Adan Hospital. “Her mother states she does not feed well and is often lethargic.”
Amina has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition that can result in brain damage as excess fluid accumulates inside the skull. The first child for her parents, Amina lives in an area of Somalia where the local hospital cannot treat her condition. Amina’s parents are unemployed, and are concerned that Amina’s condition will worsen since they cannot afford treatment.
For $640, we can fund a surgical procedure that will insert a shunt to drain the excess fluid in Amina’s skull. Doctors anticipate that the surgery will reduce the size of Amina’s head, decrease her risk of brain damage, and increase her appetite and activity. Let’s help baby Amina grow into a healthy young girl!
