Vath is a 46-year-old cashew farmer in Kampong Thom province, Cambodia. He is married with three sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren. He and his wife live with their daughter and one of their grandsons. At the end of a long day outside, he enjoys listening to the news or music on his phone.
A few years ago, Vath developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him itchiness and blurry vision. He has neglected his farm, their sole source of income, because he has trouble seeing in bright or low light. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own.
When Vath learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On September 5th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. He can contribute $100, but needs your help to raise $163 more to fund his procedure and care.
Vath said: “I hope after an operation, I can see better to grow rice and cashew nuts for my family.”
