Bunrong is a 13-year-old boy from Cambodia. He is in Grade 6 and is the only child in his family. His father works as a rice farmer, and his mother runs a small grocery business to support the household. He enjoys studying English, playing football with his friends, and dreams of becoming a police officer in the future.

About one year ago, Bunrong developed a mass over his right wrist after sustaining an injury while playing volleyball. At that time, he received treatment with an X-ray examination and wrist immobilization in a cast for 21 days. Although the initial treatment was completed, he continued to experience pain in his wrist. Over time, the mass gradually increased in size, causing ongoing discomfort and making it difficult for him to write his lessons and complete schoolwork comfortably.

After being referred to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled three hours with his family to seek specialized care. Doctors diagnosed him with a right wrist tumor and scheduled an en bloc resection procedure to remove the tumor on May 20th. This surgery is expected to relieve pain, restore wrist function, and allow him to return to school and daily activities without discomfort. Now, Bunrong needs help to raise $841 to fund this procedure.

Bunrong’s grandmother said, “I have been worried watching him live with pain and discomfort in his wrist. I pray this surgery will remove the problem, relieve his pain, and help him use his hand normally again so he can study, play volleyball, and enjoy life without difficulty.”

Patients often face late diagnoses, few treatment options, and lack of specialized doctors in Cambodia. Cambodian preference is often to first visit traditional medicine practitioners or spiritual healers, delaying their eventual diagnosis. Often, patients try health products and medication advertised online. They may experience depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem due to changes in their appearance and the challenges they face in daily life. They face low awareness of disease and screening measures, inadequate treatment facilities and heavy financial costs. They are unable to get a job, are socially ostracized, and end up hidden at home or begging on the streets, and dying a painful death.

What does the treatment process look like?

Patients usually present themselves in an advanced stage of a tumor or mass. After histology confirms a diagnosis, a surgical incision is made in the facial area overlying the tumor. The precise location and size of the incision depend on the tumor's characteristics and location. The surgeon carefully dissects the tissues around the tumor to expose it. The tumor is then removed along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal and reduce the risk of recurrence. The surgeon may use various techniques depending on the nature of the tumor. Depending on the size and location of the tumor and the extent of tissue removal, facial reconstruction may be required to restore the patient's appearance and function. This could involve techniques such as skin grafts, local flaps, or microsurgical techniques to rebuild facial structures. Complex surgeries as described often take 6-8 hours.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

Patients can regain a better appearance and functional abilities, such as speech and swallowing. They may experience improved communication and acceptance from society as a whole despite their disfigurement.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

Patients may experience complications of surgery, depending on the extent of the tumor or mass. This may include bleeding, infection, or rejection of skin grafts.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

This treatment is not generally available to Cambodians as it is challenging to navigate the limited options for care in the country. CSC offers these complex surgeries when surgeons visit to teach local Khmer surgeons. Patients may travel up to 8 hours to reach CSC during this time and may stay at the hospital for several weeks. This puts a strain on families who already have limited resources.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

Cambodian preference is to first visit traditional medicine practitioners or spiritual healers, delaying their eventual diagnosis. Patients with money and resources may choose to go to Thailand to receive treatment, often at a higher cost. Based on the type of tumor and the location, if a patient has functional limitations for facial, head, or neck tumors, surgery is usually the best option. Chemotherapy and radiation are not available or very limited in rural areas and it is very costly.

Mahamadou is a four-year-old boy from Mali. For the past year, Mahamadou has been experiencing an inguino-scrotal hernia, a condition where abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall and extends down into the scrotal sac. He also has a hydrocele. These conditions have been causing him swelling and much discomfort. Fortunately, on April 23rd, Mahamadou will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, Muso, is requesting $611 to fund Mahamadou's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live a healthier life. Mahamadou's parents shared, "We hope that this treatment will make the swelling and discomfort disappear."

Athalya is a little girl whose smile brightens the spirits of everyone around her. Despite her young age, she shows a special sensitivity when it comes to caring for others. She deeply enjoys music and dance. Athalya dreams of becoming a dancer one day, moving freely and joyfully to the rhythm of her favorite songs. Athalya lives in the town of Rionegro, Antioquia, with her parents, who lovingly support her at every stage of her development. However, about ten months ago, Athalya began experiencing oral discomfort that disrupted her daily routine. After seeing a dentist, she was diagnosed with dentin caries, a condition that began to affect her oral health and also her overall well-being. The pain and discomfort caused by this condition made everyday activities such as eating, concentrating, and fully enjoying her games increasingly difficult. This caused concern among Athalya's family, who sought specialized care to prevent the situation from worsening further. Following a comprehensive evaluation by the dental team, it was determined that, given the extent of the damage and Athalya's age, the safest and most effective treatment should be performed under general anesthesia. This decision made it possible to plan a comprehensive procedure focused on properly restoring Athalya's oral health without causing her any distress. Fortunately, Athalya will get the procedure she needs under anesthesia on April 29th. Our medical partner, Clínica Noel, is requesting $1,109 to help fund her care. Her mother kindly shared, "For Athalya, this treatment represents an opportunity for relief and recovery. It is hoped that it will not only eliminate her physical pain, but also restore her peace of mind when eating, the energy to learn, and the confidence to continue dancing, smiling, and dreaming. Jeronimo is a little boy from Colombia. He lives in Támesis, Antioquia with his parents. He is curious and intelligent, full of dreams and eager to get ahead. Jeronimo was diagnosed with a birth defect in a sensitive area. If left untreated, Jeronimo has an increased risk of developing hernias, testicular cancer, and fertility problems in the future. Knowing of these future complications has been difficult for Jeronimo's family, especially given their financial circumstances. The opportunity to receive care would represent an immense blessing for their family and new hope for Jeronimo's future. Fortunately, Jeronimo will be receiving assistance from our medical partner, Clinica Noel. He is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on February 24th. Clinica Noel is requesting $1,167 to cover the cost of his procedure and care. His parents shared that they hope treatment will significantly transform Jeronimo's quality of life.
