Sothe Yong is a four-year-old boy from Cambodia. He is the only child in his family. His father is a rice farmer, while his mother works at a local clothing factory. They have lived with his maternal grandmother since his grandfather passed away 15 years ago. During his free time, he enjoys playing with toys at home and loves eating fried and boiled eggs.
Sothe Yong was born with an obstetric brachial plexus injury, a condition where the brachial plexus nerves in the shoulder were damaged during birth, often due to shoulder dystocia or other factors during delivery. This can result in weakness, paralysis, or loss of sensation in the affected arm, hand, and shoulder. Since birth, he has had limited movement in his left arm and hand. His parents took him to the hospital when he was younger, but were only advised to move his hand regularly. He needs to undergo a tendon and nerve repair procedure to help regain strength and mobility.
Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is helping Sothe Yong receive treatment. He is scheduled to undergo the tendon and nerve repair procedure on July 8th. This procedure will cost $701, and Sothe Yong and his family need your support.
Sothe Yong’s mother said, “I hope his hand will work better so he can carry things on his own and play like other children.”

Sothe Yong’s surgery was a success! During this procedure, a functioning tendon from one part of his body was detached and reattached to the non-functioning tendon. This process allows the functioning tendon to pull on the paralyzed one, restoring movement. After surgery, he received pain management as needed and will keep his arm in a soft cast until he is seen again by the surgeons to remove his stitches. This should significantly enhance Sothe Yong’s ability to use his left arm. While the rehabilitation process will require extensive physiotherapy, it should enable him to play and function more like other children his age, ultimately helping him gain greater independence as he grows. The surgeons look forward to seeing him again over the next year as they assess his progress.
Sothe Yong’s mother shared that the staff at the Children’s Surgical Centre were kind and patient with both her and her son. She felt well cared for and appreciated the support and encouragement throughout their stay. His father was optimistic as well and said, “Our family is happy Sothe Yong could have this surgery; it will improve his future.”
