Ashenafi is a 12-year-old boy from Ethiopia. His parents are farmers, and they have eight children. Ashenafi has chronic osteomyelitis, a severe bone infection, which has caused him a great degree of physical disability, resulting in educational delays such that he is several grades behind in shcool.
Ashenafi has been experiencing persistent infected discharge and sharp pain in his leg for over a year. Following his review at our medical partner’s care center Saglan Wajee General Hospital, doctors have recommended that Ashenafi undergo a sequestrectomy, a surgical procedure involving the removal of fragments of infected dead bone or tissue. If not treated, it can lead to recurrent infections that may result in life-threatening complications.
Fortunately, on October 11th, he will undergo the repair surgery at our medical partner’s care center. Our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital, is requesting $900 to fund Ashenafi’s surgery. Once completed, this procedure will alleviate his symptoms and prevent serious long-term complications.
Ashenafi’s parents said, “We dream of one thing: a future where our son can walk freely, return to a normal class schedule, and simply have the childhood he deserves.”
