Phat is a bright nine-year-old student from Cambodia who is in third grade. She loves reading books and playing with her older sister, who is in ninth grade. To support their family, her mother works in a factory and her father works as a farmer.
When Phat was six-years-old, she had an ear infection. This infection caused the ear drum of her right ear to perforate. For this reason, she now experiences chronic pain and hearing loss.
Phat and her family traveled to our medical partner’s care center to receive treatment. On August 9th, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her right ear to close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $487 to fund this procedure. This covers an X-ray, supplies, and inpatient care.
Phat says, “I hope my hearing will improve and my pain will go away after the surgery.”

Phat was fortunate to have ear surgery to repair her eardrum. Without treatment, her symptoms could have become more serious. Prior to surgery, she often felt poorly and could not hear well in school. After surgery, she was relieved to know that she may have fully recovered. Phat was instructed to rest after surgery and apply ear drops frequently to avoid any future infection. She will return to CSC in a few months to re-assess her hearing. She will no longer have to miss school, and her communication skills will improve. This treatment will help her be successful both socially and in school.
Phat’s mother said: “I am happy we don’t have to pay for expensive medicine anymore and she can return to school. I am thankful to the supporters who funded her surgery and hope that they continue to help Cambodians who need help.”
