Hoeu is a 52 year old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has two daughters, five sons, and eight grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio.
Five months ago, Hoeu developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision, photophobia, and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Hoeu learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for seven and a half hours seeking treatment. On January 7th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
“I hope that I can see clearly again so I can help look after my family and grandchildren,” she said.

Hoeu underwent cataract surgery.
Hoeu has returned home to her family in Preah Vihear Province, near the norther border of Cambodia. Hoeu’s surgery was successful and her visual acuity has improved. Her son feels so happy that his mother can now see everything clearly after surgery and he no longer has to worry about her vision loss.
“I am so glad that I can see clearly after my operation. I am able to see everyone and everything more clearly than before, and I am able to help my family around the house with the cooking, cleaning, and taking care of my grandchildren. I feel comfortable going to the market on my own, and can go anyplace I want on my own again.”
