78-year-old Kun is a wife, mother, and grandmother from Cambodia who enjoys doing house work and visiting the pagoda to listen to the monks pray.
“Two years ago Kun developed a cataract in each eye,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) tells us. “This causes her blurred vision, pain, and tearing.”
Cataracts occur when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy which causes decreased vision. The degree of decreased vision from cataracts varies, but the condition overall makes it hard for the patient to conduct daily activities.
For $225, Kun will undergo a surgical procedure— phaco surgery and IOL implant in each eye—to remove the cloudy lens and place a clear lens implant in its place. “After a phaco surgery and IOL implant in each eye, Kun will be able to see clearly again,” says CSC.
Funding also includes pre- and post-operative consultations, eye drops and ointments for Kun.
Kun’s daughter says, “I hope my mother can see everything more clearly so she can easily do work and go anywhere by herself more easily than now. I hope I don’t have to worry about her becoming blind anymore.”
Kun shares her own hopes: “I hope my eyes can see everything more clearly so I can easily do any work well like cooking food, taking care of my grandchildren at home, walking to the pagoda, and visiting my son in another village, too.”
