Meng Lang is a clever first grader. She is five years old and has two younger sisters. Her parents and sisters live two hours away in a rural village, where her parents work as rice farmers. Meng Lang lives with her grandmother in the capital city of Phnom Penh so that she has access to a better education. Meng Lang loves dolls and playing with her friends.
Meng Lang was born with syndactyly of both feet. This means that both of her pinky toes are fused to the toe next to it. She feels embarrassed to wear sandals like her friends, and her grandmother doesn’t want her to miss any more school or playing with friends due to feeling shy and having less balance.
Fortunately, on December 4, surgeons will perform a syndactyly repair procedure to separate and release the fused toes. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $444 to fund this procedure. After surgery, Ming Lang will feel more confident.
Her grandmother shared, “I just want Meng Lang to feel good and go to school happy.”

Meng Lang underwent foot surgery.
Despite her condition, Meng Lang enjoyed hopping and skipping through life, never letting her syndactyly slow her down. When Meng Lang grew older, she expressed a desire for surgery to separate her toes so that others wouldn’t make fun of her feet. After receiving a stuffed bear from the staff before surgery, the doctors worked skillfully to separate her fused toes. The surgery went smoothly, and Meng Lang is going to her home province to recover at her grandmother’s house. She said that she looks forward to returning to school and showing off her new toes. These positive social experiences will contribute to healthy self-esteem as she grows older.
Meng Lang’s grandmother said: “I am so happy that my granddaughter can have a good life and feel comfortable with other children. We are very grateful to the kind staff who took care of her.”
