Degete is a 61-year-old farmer from Ethiopia. After her husband died, Degete worked day and night on her farm to provide for her three children, teaching them the true meaning of hard work. She has always been the backbone of her village, but her eye condition is now threatening the sight she needs to keep moving forward.
Three years ago, Degete developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her reduced vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, which causes blurred vision. Tasks that used to be easy are now a daily struggle and she can no longer tend to her farm or care for her family the way she loves to. She has even pulled away from her friends, yet, she is determined to find a way to see clearly again so she can get back her independence and the life she worked so hard to build.
The fog in her eyes has taken away one of her favorite things: going to church. She misses sitting with her old friends, sharing stories about the past, and laughing together through the good times and the bad. Without her sight, she feels cut off from the community that she loves so much.
Fortunately, Degete is scheduled to undergo cataract surgery on December 27th, with the help of our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital. Surgeons will remove and replace the blurred lens. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, Degete needs help to raise $150 to fund this procedure.
“I have been a fighter my entire life. All I want now is to see clearly again so I can stand on my own two feet. I miss the person I used to be, and I am praying for the chance to be independent and active once more,” said Degeta.
