Tukamuhebwa is a farmer from Uganda. She is a married mother to two children, all studying with the eldest finishing senior year four and her youngest in senior year one. Tukamuhebwa studied and completed senior year four but never proceeded due to lack of school fees. She currently earns a living from farming where she grows food crops like maize, beans and cassava for home consumption but at times sells off the beans to generate an income to the family. She shared that her husband suffers from chronic alcoholism and does not take care of their family.
Twenty years ago, Tukamuhebwa began to experience troubling symptoms, including difficulty in breathing, shortness of breathing and rapid heart palpitations. She was diagnosed with a goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Tukamuhebwa receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on September 8th at our medical partner’s care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $252, and she and her family need help raising money.
Tukamuhebwa says: “I think I will regain my health once again after my surgery goes on well and I hope to resume with farming after surgery.”
