Melany received successful asthma treatment.

Before getting treatment for asthma, Melany had a difficult time breathing and grew tired easily, which made it difficult for her to sleep and eat. Melany has gotten much better since entering the program. She sleeps and eats more comfortably, and she loves to run around with her older brother. With continued support, Melany will be able to manage her asthma and keep living a normal childhood.

Melany’s mother says, “Thank you for the help my daughter is receiving. I have already seen how she is getting better, which makes me very happy. The treatment helps so much, and I have hope that she will keep getting better. One day I wish to see my daughter graduate from school and become a teacher.”

Melany is a two-year-old girl from Guatemala. She previously received Watsi funding for malnutrition treatment. Although her growth has improved, she has been facing frequent asthma attacks for about two months, along with a recurrent cough. She does not like to play because she is scared she will have an asthma attack. Recently, she has been coughing so much that she is unable to sleep, making her tired and irritable during the day. Fortunately, Melany began asthma treatment on January 2.

Melany lives with her family in a home made of tin and wood. She loves to run, play, and laugh with her two siblings. Her father works as a day laborer in a local plantation. He has difficulty buying basics, such as food and clothes for the family. He needs help to fund this $422 procedure.

This treatment will provide Melany with continued medical care and six months of intense treatment for her acute asthma. It will allow her to run and play, sleep better, and live healthily.

Melany’s mother says, “I appreciate the help that you will give my daughter because it has been making me very worried. My hope is to see her grow into a young woman who studies and one day will become a teacher.”

Douby

Douby is a 17 year old student, living with his Godmother and her family in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Douby enjoys going to school, and aspires to attain a PhD in agronomy, and to become a professor. As a result of rheumatic fever that he suffered as a child, Douby has a cardiac condition called rheumatic mitral and tricuspid regurgitation. Two of his four heart valves were severely damaged by the rheumatic fever, and his heart cannot adequately pump blood through his body, leaving him sick and short of breath. The care Douby needs is not available in Haiti so he urgently will fly to the United States to receive treatment on February 28th at Baylor Scott & White Heart Hospital. He will undergo emergency cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will attempt to repair both damaged valves; if the valves cannot be repaired, they will be removed, and artificial valves will be implanted in their place. While another organization, Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital, is contributing $20,000.00 to help pay for Douby's surgery, our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is seeking $1,500 to cover the costs for the surgery prep and transport support, including lab tests; medicines, and follow up appointments. The money will alsosupport the passport and travel expenses for the social workers that will accompany Douby and his family to the U.S. Douby was able to share: "I am looking forward to being stronger and healthier once my heart can be repaired!"
