Kelly lives with her family in rural Guatemala. Her father works in agriculture, and her mother is a homemaker. Kelly has been diagnosed with malnutrition, a dangerous condition that results from consuming too little protein, calories, and other nutrients. Because she is malnourished, Kelly has little energy to grow and and her immune system is weak, which leaves her vulnerable to illness. The long-term consequences of malnutrition include increased risk of chronic disease and lowered IQ.
Kelly’s parents have limited financial resources and are unable to afford the necessary treatment. Fortunately, she will begin treatment with our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, on January 19. She will receive food supplements, and her growth will be monitored.
With treatment, Kelly can recover and grow normally. In addition, community health workers will teach her mother how to create a nutrient-rich diet on a limited budget.
Kelly’s parents say, “We are very thankful for the people who decided to donate so we can receive the help. God bless you.”
