Olga is a six-month-old baby girl from Guatemala. She lives with her mother and grandparents. Olga’s mother takes care of the household and weaves textiles to bring in extra income.
Olga has been diagnosed with malnutrition. Her mother cannot produce breastmilk, a condition known as lactational failure. As a result, Olga is the size of a healthy three-month-old. To stabilize her condition, Olga was given a preliminary supply of formula. She will need more in order to grow up healthily.
Beginning on March 21, Olga will receive nutritional supplements at Clinic Panajachel, our medical partner’s care center. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is asking for $1,162 to cover the cost of Olga’s treatment. Funds will also go towards an educational program that will teach her mother how to create a nutrient-rich diet for Olga using limited resources.
“I wish for Olga to recover her health and get better,” says Olga’s mother.

Olga received malnutrition treatment.
Since beginning treatment for malnutrition, Olga has been growing bigger and stronger. Olga’s mother says that she was worried for her daughter’s health after Olga had to be brought to the hospital. Now she is doing everything possible for her daughter to get well, and she can see that her daughter is gaining weight and growing. With continued treatment, we are confident that Olga will continue along this healthy trajectory.
Olga’s mother says, “I am very happy and thankful to the program. Olga is more active and playful now—she can even sit up by herself, and she is starting to eat solid foods.”
