Kimtok is a 65-year-old woman who lives in a learning center for people with special needs in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She has no living relatives and spends her time working with younger participants where she lives who need extra help.
In April 2019, Kimtok had a seizure while burning trash and fell into the fire. She received treatment at a government hospital but still has painful burn scars and contractures on the left side of her neck and shoulder. As a result, she cannot lift her arm or perform simple self-care activities.
When Kimtok learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she visited the hospital for treatment. On December 7th, surgeons at CSC will perform a skin graft procedure to help her move again to perform her own self-care activities. CSC is requesting $474 to fund Kimtok’s procedure.
Kimtok shared that she hopes her left neck and shoulder will be better after surgery with no contracture, so she can move her neck more easily.

Kimtok underwent skin graft surgery to be more independent.
Kimtok had successful surgery to release her skin contractures and place a skin graft. She was at the hospital for a week and now that the medical team has ensured she is healing well, she had traveled home. She will be able to hold her head straight, continue her work at the learning centre, and resume her normal life. The surgeons look forward to seeing her again in a few months to determine if any further care is needed.
Kimtok said: “Thank you to the staff and surgeons who could help me have independence after so many months of relying on others to help me. I am grateful to the donors who helped to pay for me to have a better life and serve others.”
