Meet San, a 78-year-old woman from Cambodia. When she isn’t spending time with her three sons, 1 daughter, and 15 grandchildren, she enjoys doing work around the house.
San has been dealing with cataracts in both of her eyes for one year. Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which lies behind the pupil. Symptoms include dim vision and blurriness. If left untreated, cataracts can cause permanent vision loss.
$225 will fund the treatment San needs to correct her vision. In order to remove her cataracts, San will undergo cataract surgery in both eyes. This involves surgically removing the affected lenses and replacing each of them with a clear artificial lens. Cataract surgery is very effective—San will have restored vision soon after recovery.
After San’s surgery, she looks forward to having an easier time joining in ceremonies and listening to the monks pray at the pagoda.

San had the cataract in her right eye successfully removed in a short surgery, during which her clouded lens was taken out and replaced with a clear, artificial implant. The procedure went very well and her vision is already much clearer than it was before. With her restored sight, San looks forward to visiting the local pagoda on her own as well as helping take care of her fifteen grandchildren.
Although she was scheduled to have cataracts in both eyes removed, San has yet to return to undergo the second operation.
For a number of reasons it can often take some patients extra time to return for follow-up care. Frequently, patients life far away or do not have the family escort required for them to have the surgery, preventing them from coming back to the clinic. When San can return, her next surgery will also be free.
