Nimol is a 16-year-old girl who lives in Kandaal province with her parents. Currently, both of her parents are unemployed and hope to find job opportunities soon. Nimol’s five older siblings have left home and work in construction and factories, which helps support the family. Nimol likes spending time with her friends and eating Cambodian sour soup.
Around four years ago, Nimol started noticing a flexion contracture/stiffness in her right knee. She is unable to fully straighten her knee and feels discomfort.
When Nimol learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On December 6th, surgeons at CSC will perform a quadricepsplasty (a leg surgery to the quadricep muscle to improve knee flexion) procedure to help her walk again and improve her quality of life. Now, Nimol’s family needs help to fund this $482 procedure.
Nimol shared, “I hope my knee can get better so I am not so uncomfortable and I can move more easily.”

Nimol underwent leg surgery.
Doctors were confounded about the source of Nimol’s leg stiffness until they learned that she had received injections in her thigh as a toddler. The fibrous muscle contractures from repeated injections affected her right leg, making it difficult for her to walk and run like the other girls her age. It was a financial struggle for Nimol’s mother to get adequate care for her daughter until they heard about the Children’s Surgical Centre from a relative. The procedure’s goal was to improve the function and mobility of her leg by repositioning and reconstructing the quadriceps muscles. It was a complex surgery, but the skilled medical team worked hard to give Nimol the best possible outcome.
After surgery, she had a short stay in the hospital and worked with the physiotherapy team to learn rehabilitative exercises. She no longer attends school but has newfound physical freedom to look for work and a bright future.
Nimol’s father said: “We are relieved that our daughter will walk well and be able to find a job soon. She is very bright and wants to be more independent. Thank you to the doctors who helped repair her leg.”
