Cyrus is a three-year-old boy from the Philippines. He lives with his parents and siblings in a house made from bamboo. His father works as a motorcycle driver and a laborer.

Cyrus has been diagnosed with moderately acute malnutrition. Malnutrition threatens his growth and development and could even be fatal if not addressed. Fortunately, he will begin $184 malnutrition treatment on February 20.

Cyrus will be treated by International Care Ministries (ICM), a Watsi medical partner. One out of five children under five in ICM communities is either severely or moderately malnourished. Worldwide, poor nutrition is associated with nearly half of all deaths in young children. In remote communities and urban slums of the Philippines, the lack of clean water and unclean environments add risk to potentially fatal childhood diseases.

ICM’s home-based feeding program provides nutrient-enriched food packs to ensure malnourished children get additional food to regain normal weight and achieve optimum physical and mental development. After identifying a child as malnourished, staff and community volunteers make weekly visits to monitor this child’s progress. To help sustain the health of the child, ICM’s professional staff educate the mother, guardian, or other family members about proper nutrition, sanitation, hygiene, and organic vegetable gardening.

Let’s help Cyrus get healthy!

Merida

Merida is a 63-year-old small-scale farmer. She has five children ranging in age from 20 years old to 40 years old. Her husband passed away about six years ago. She shared that her children could not attend school beyond class five and that their responsibilities limit them from providing financial support. About ten years ago, Merida experienced swelling in her neck that increased in size over time. Merida is unable to bend down comfortably and experiences airway blockage when she carries heavy loads and has heaviness in her shoulders. She can also no longer breathe well while sleeping. She has used herbs for healing and recently visited the hospital at our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH). The doctors diagnosed her condition as a goiter, which is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. They recommended a thyroidectomy, which will address her symptoms and prevent the risk that the condition may become cancerous and cause difficulty breathing and eating over time. On November 9th, Merida will undergo a thyroidectomy at AMH’s care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. AMH is requesting $333 to fund Merida’s surgery. Merida shared, “I pray that I may be considered for treatment so that I may get relief from the swollen neck that I have carried for a very long time. I hope to look normal again and live a better, happy, and enjoyable life for the rest of my life. I will resume farming as soon as possible.”

Da

Da is a 67-year-old man who lives with his wife and son in a village on the border of Thailand. Da cannot work since his vision deteriorated three years ago. Da's wife is a homemaker, and his son works as a day laborer. In his free time, Da likes to listen to gospel songs. Starting three years ago, Da's right pupil gradually turned white. The vision in his right eye also blurred over time. Later on, the vision in his left eye also became blurred. When he went to Mae Sot Hospital, the doctor diagnosed him with cataracts in both his eyes and told him he would need surgery. However, when Da told the doctor the he had experienced seizures in the past, the doctor ordered a CT scan to check if the problem with his vision is being caused by a brain tumor. Currently, Da cannot see anything and can only perceive light. He needs someone to guide him to the toilet and help him take a shower because he cannot see. Doctors want Da to undergo a CT scan, a procedure in which x-ray images taken from several angles are combined to produce cross-sectional images of the body. This scan will hopefully help doctors diagnose his condition and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $414 to cover the cost of Da's CT scan and care, scheduled for November 29th. Da says, "If my vision is restored, I will teach my son how to farm the land and grow crops. I will also volunteer at the Church as much as I can."
