Meet Saret, a 66-year-old man from Cambodia. “Saret is married with four sons, four daughters, and 15 grandchildren. Saret enjoys to watch social news on TV and listen to monks pray on the radio,” shares our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
Three months ago, Saret developed mature cataracts in each eye. A cataract occurs when a thin, cloudy layer forms over the eye’s lens. “This causes him blurred vision, discharge, tearing, and fear of bright lights. It is hard for him to see clearly, do work, or go outside,” CSC explains.
After learning about CSC, Saret and his daughter travelled four hours to visit their clinic. They learned that a simple surgical procedure may restore Saret’s sight.
For $225, Saret will undergo cataract surgery, during which his old lenses will be removed and replaced with sheer artificial implants, allowing him to see again immediately after his operation.

Saret underwent successful cataract removal surgery.
Saret had one of his cataracts removed in a short procedure, during which his clouded lens was removed and replaced with a clear, artificial implant. Though he was scheduled to have both cataracts treated, he has yet to return to the clinic for the second surgery.
For any number of reasons, it can take patients some time to return for follow-up care. Patients often live far away, or have important family matters that keep them from coming back to the clinic. Whenever Saret returns, the surgery to remove his other cataract will be free.
