Sonnary is a 10-year-old student from Cambodia. She lives in Kampong Chhnang province with her parents, who are rice farmers. She has an older brother who is in grade seven. She is currently in fifth grade and especially enjoys studying mathematics. She hopes to become a teacher when she grows up. At home, she loves playing outdoor games with her friends in the village and eating caramelized pork with eggs.
Seven years ago, Nary fell off a bed, resulting in a flexion contracture of her right knee. This means the knee is stuck in a bent position and cannot fully straighten, which happens because the soft tissues around the joint — such as muscles, tendons, or scar tissue — become tight or shortened over time. She is unable to bend her knee fully, feels pain when she tries to bend it, and has difficulty walking.
When Sonnary learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On January 7th, surgeons at CSC will perform a quadricepsplasty procedure on her right leg to help her walk easily. Now, Sonnary needs help to fund this $579 procedure.
Sonnary’s parents said, “After the surgery, we hope that our daughter will be able to walk easily without pain and play with her friends happily.”
