Keilyn is a baby girl from Guatemala. She lives with her parents and three siblings in a cinderblock home with a tin roof. Keilyn loves playing with her doll and trying to crawl while her mother washes clothes on the patio. She also loves eating corn tortillas with tomatoes.
Keilyn is 11 months old, but she is only the size of a healthy 5 month old. She is malnourished, and her diet lacks the protein, calories, and nutrients she needs in order to grow and develop.
Even though Keilyn’s parents want the best for her, they cannot afford to give her the diet she needs to recover from malnutrition. Her father wakes up before sunrise every morning to chop and sell firewood, and her mother sells dishes and plates in front of their house. Together, they make only a couple dollars per day. “We hope that our little girl grows well and can have a dignified life and pursue some kind of profession,” said Keilyn’s mother.
Keilyn’s mother is worried because she recognizes that her daughter is not growing as she should. Her poor diet also contributes to a weakened immune system. She is constantly sick, leaving her with little energy and no appetite. If she does not receive treatment, Keilyn could face long-term consequences, such as low IQ and increased risk of chronic diseases as an adult.
Growth monitoring, micronutrient and food supplementation, and deworming medication will help Keilyn recover from malnutrition. She will gain weight and grow taller to catch up with other children her age. Her immune system will grow stronger with the increased caloric intake, giving her a larger appetite and more energy to grow and play. Intervention now will give Keilyn the chance to live a healthy and productive life.
