Maurine is a 36-year-old widowed mother of two children. In 2022, she experienced a sudden and unexpected change that would alter her life. Without warning, she lost the ability to hear. At first, Maurine struggled to understand what was happening. Simple conversations became difficult, and communicating with her children was no longer easy. She could not hear when they spoke to her, and responding to their needs became increasingly challenging. In December 2022, she went to AIC Kijabe Hospital for a medical review. After assessment, the doctors recommended hearing aids to help her regain the ability to hear and communicate. A well-wisher paid for one hearing aid, which made communication easier, including with her children. Sadly, in 2025, the hearing aid stopped working. Gradually, Maurine began withdrawing from those close to her. She works as a house help, but her hearing loss also began to affect her ability to earn a living. In January this year, she returned to the hospital, where she was advised to obtain new hearing aids, but the cost was far beyond what she could afford. Still hoping for a solution, she returned to hospital in August, hoping she would find help. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping her find treatment. On Sept 9th, Maurine will be fitted with hearing aids. For Maurine, this would mean much more than the ability to hear sounds again. It would mean being able to communicate with her children. It would mean understanding her employer, and it would mean reconnecting with family and friends, regaining her confidence, and no longer living in isolation. Now, Maurine needs help to fund this $1,171 procedure. She says: “I wish to hear again, so I can communicate more confidently with my family and friends."

Yeabtsega is a calm and cheerful 10-year-old boy from Ethiopia. He loves playing football and practicing taekwondo. He is passionate about sports and enjoys spending time with his older brother and younger sister. He is currently in Grade 5 and lives with his mother, a single parent who works at a government institution. When he was younger, Yeabtsega's mother noticed that one of his testicles would sometimes appear and disappear. However, as he grew older, she noticed that it was no longer visible. Concerned about her son, she took him to a clinic near their home, where a doctor examined him and performed an ultrasound. The doctor informed her that Yeabtsega needed surgery. Hearing that her son needed surgery was heartbreaking for his mother, especially as she was raising him as a single parent. She began searching for a hospital where he could receive the treatment he needed. She eventually took him to a government hospital, where he was placed on a waiting list for surgery. After about a month, Yeabtsega was referred to BethanyKids Myungsung Christian Medical Centre (BKMCM). His mother shared that it felt as though a heavy burden had been lifted from her shoulders. At BKMCM, the medical team carefully assessed him, and diagnosed him with cryptorchidism, a condition in which one or both of the testicles remains undescended. If left untreated, Yeabtsega has an increased risk of medical complications in the future. Yeabtsega is receiving assistance from our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH). Fortunately, he is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on September 4th. AMH is requesting $754 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. Yeabtsega’s mother said, “Thank you, BethanyKids and donors, for your support. I truly appreciate the work you are doing for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to receive the surgery they need. Your support gives hope to families like ours. Thank you for giving my son this opportunity. I wish Yeabtsega good health, success, and a bright future. May he grow up to be a healthy and successful young man.”

Ran is a 35-year-old construction worker from Cambodia. He lives in Kampong Speu Province with his wife, who works in a garment factory. They have two children: one studying in Grade 3 and a 11-month-old baby. He helps support the family through construction work and enjoys planting vegetables around his home during his free time. On the 4th of May 2026, Ran was involved in a motorcycle-versus-car accident, which resulted in a right knee injury. Following the accident, he initially sought traditional treatment, but his symptoms persisted and worsened over time. He experiences persistent pain and stiffness in his right knee, making it difficult to walk comfortably. The condition limits his mobility and affects his ability to perform heavy physical work and daily activities. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On May 25th, Ran will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will help reduce pain and stiffness in the knee, improve joint function, and restore mobility so he can walk more comfortably and return to work and daily life. Ran can contribute $100, but needs help raising $500 more to fund his treatment and care. Ran said, “After the surgery, I hope that the pain will improve with treatment. I am hopeful that with proper care, I will be able to walk comfortably again and return to my daily activities.”
