Menghong and his family live in Kampong Cham province, approximately a three-hour ride to the capital of Phnom Penh city. Both of his parents are rice farmers, and he has a younger sister. In school, he likes mathematics and would like to be a policeman when he is older. As a nine-year-old who is rapidly growing, he enjoys playing with his little sister and eating duck eggs with rice.
Several years ago, Menghong slipped on some water and badly bruised his left wrist. At first, his parents dismissed it, thinking it was just a minor discomfort that would fade away. However, the pain has intensified and he cannot use his wrist. He has a hard lump, and when touched, he experiences a sensation similar to a painful electric shock.
Menghong’s parents took him to the local clinic, where they suggested they take him to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre. Specialty doctors examined him and determined he may have a calcified neuroma in his wrist—a condition that requires surgery to alleviate the pain and prevent further complications.
On December 14th, surgeons will explore his ulnar nerve near his left wrist and remove the neuroma. Now his parents need your help to pay for the $572 cost of the procedure, which includes surgery, hospitalization, medications, post-op care, and rehabilitation.
Menghong’s mother said: “We are very worried about my son and hope that after surgery he will have no more pain and can use his hand again.”
