Heang is a 14-year-old student from Cambodia. He lives with his parents and his younger brother in Kampong Speu province. His parents work as chili and pumpkin farmers to support the family. Heang is in grade nine and dreams of becoming a teacher. At home, he enjoys helping his mom in the garden; his favorite meal is fried eggs and rice.
Two years ago, Heang had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the eardrum, in his left ear to perforate, causing pain and ear discharge. His parents took him to a provincial hospital, where he was given medication, but he continued to have symptoms.
On May 8th, Heang will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in his left ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, requests $487 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care.
Heang’s mother said, “I hope he can live without worrying about any symptoms that make him feel uncomfortable.”

At the suggestion of a local clinic, Heang and his family traveled five hours for a consultation and surgery to address his hearing difficulties. This was a crucial step for him, as untreated symptoms could lead to permanent hearing loss. After recovering from the surgery, he was able to return home. He used antibiotic drops to reduce the risk of re-infection and returned to the hospital a week later to have his stitches removed. This surgery will enhance his hearing and communication skills. Heang’s mother looks forward to eliminating the costs of the medication she has been purchasing for him.
Heang said: “I am excited after this operation. The doctors paid close attention to my problems, and I can now return to school and hear well.”
