Rachana is a five-year-old girl from Cambodia. She lives in an isolated community in Kampong Speu province with her parents, who both work at a bag factory, and her older sister, who is currently in grade six. She does not attend school yet. With her parents’ supervision, she enjoys playing with small figures and fluffy dolls, and she likes to eat soup, especially lemongrass sour soup, which is her favorite.
Two years ago, Rachana was accidentally burned by a bonfire. After the accident, she was taken to a government hospital for treatment. Although the burns healed, she was left with burn contractures on both wrists. Since then, she has had difficulty holding objects and performing daily activities, which has limited her hand function and affected her development.
When Rachana’s parents learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, they traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On January 20th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help her hold objects more easily, making it easier for her to attend school and take part in daily activities like other children. Now, she needs help to fund this $652 procedure.
Rachana’s mother said, “After the surgery, I hope that my daughter will be able to hold objects easily, which will make it easier for her when she attends school.”
