Kheam is a 73-year-old retired rice farmer. She has one daughter, six sons, and now 15 grandchildren. Kheam lives with her youngest daughter who is a fruit seller. Kheam likes to visit the pagoda and listen to the monks pray when she can.
One year ago, Kheam developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her photophobia, tearing, and blurry vision. Kheam has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own.
When Kheam learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, (CSC) she traveled for four hours seeking treatment. On February 17th, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in Kheam’s right eye. CSC is helping Kheam raise $229 to fund this procedure so that Kheam can see clearly.
Kheam shared, “I hope to see things well again and be able to help my daughter sell fruit.”

Kheam underwent cataract surgery so she can see again.
Kheam was thrilled when she was able to open her eyes after surgery. She could see faces, and colors were more vivid. She was able to return to her province the day after surgery and will apply eye drops to aid in healing and decrease the risk of infection. Kheam is very pleased to be able to walk by herself without assistance and looks forward to seeing well enough to visit her children and grandchildren and helping her daughter. This will help to support their living and make sure they have enough food.
Kheam’s daughter said: “Thank you to the donors. I am relieved that my mother’s eyesight will be better. Before her surgery, she was sad and did not feel useful. Now she is hopeful she can have a better life and help me sell our fruit and vegetables at the market.”
