“Kim is married with one son, three daughters, and 10 grandchildren,” says our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). “She enjoys visiting the pagoda to listen to the monks pray.”
78-year-old Kim developed a cataract in each eye one year ago. Cataracts are very common among elderly people in Cambodia. They often lead to blindness because people do not know treatment is available or can’t afford it.

Kim received vision-restoring cataract surgery.
The cataract was successfully removed from her right eye, and clear vision has been restored. Kim returned home after surgery, and she has not returned for the same treatment in her left eye. Now that vision has been restored to one eye, however, the second surgery is less urgent than the first. Treatment will be free whenever Kim returns.
Kim says, “I feel very happy that I can see everything clearly. I can recognize faces, do any type of work, and walk to the pagoda or anywhere else by myself.”
