“Maynor is a curious little boy who loves to imitate his mom singing and dancing by moving his little hands and hips back and forth,” shares our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK). “He is the youngest of four children, and his sister cares for him while their mother works in the house, embroidering textiles to sell.”
21-month-old Maynor is from Guatemala, and has acute malnutrition. Maynor is below the average height and weight of a boy his age and is often sick with diarrhea.
Without intervention, Maynor is at risk of experiencing the long term effects of malnutrition including a decline in his mental and physical development, and chronic illness.
For $535, Maynor will receive the nutritional support he needs. “This treatment will provide Maynor with micronutrient and food supplementation as well as medication to stop infections and improve his state of malnutrition,” WK explains.
Maynor’s mother will also receive nutrition education. This program will provide her with the resources and confidence necessary to ensure the long-term health of Maynor and his siblings.
Combined, this intervention will give Maynor the chance to experience a healthy childhood, allowing him to succeed in school in the future.
“It is difficult to raise my children on my own, to buy all that they need and care for the house and work,” shares Maynor’s mother. “It’s hard, but I do it because I have to and because I love them. I am so thankful that you want to help us.”
