“I hope Angel can recover. I want to see him happy, and I want him to grow like my other children,” says Angel’s mother.
Meet Angel, a one-year-old boy from Guatemala who is malnourished. “He has had a series of pretty severe intestinal infections and, as a result, his weight has suffered. His appetite is poor, and his diet is also poor because his family can’t afford to provide him with high quality foods. He needs nutritional intervention to protect his brain development,” says our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq.
“Angel is the youngest in a large family. When he is feeling well, he likes to play with his older brothers and sisters, but lately he’s been too unwell to interact with them much,” says Wuqu’ Kawoq. Angel’s father is a day laborer on a plantation, but his earnings aren’t enough to provide for the family.
For $535, we can provide nutritional therapy to Angel so he can return to playing with his siblings. Wuqu Kawoq expects, “We’ll cure his intestinal infections. We’ll provide nutritional supplements and educational support to mom and dad. Angel will start to eat again, and his growth and development will pick up.”

Angel received treatment for chronic malnutrition.
“Angel came to us at six months old having never seen a doctor before,” explains our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq. “His mother had suffered from preeclampsia during pregnancy, which caused immediate stress on Angel’s health. He was born below the average with a weight of 4 pounds, and when he made it to us he was suffering from malnutrition due to a poor appetite and an intestinal infection. Thanks to Watsi donor support we were able to supply Angel with intestinal medication and micronutrient/food supplementation, and his mother with intense nutrition education.”
“After three months of intervention, Angel’s intestinal infection is gone and his height is improving remarkably,” continues Wuqu’ Kawoq. “He has more energy and is walking and talking, which he was not doing before. His mother has taken an active role in her learning experience; asking questions about how to further improve their son’s health. We believe she now has the tools to provide adequate nutrition to son and protect him from the devastating effects of malnutrition. Thanks to donor support, Angel now has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and economically.”
“He has been playing with his brother and just seems happier,” says Angel’s mother. “It is so wonderful to see my child recovering.”
