Nisa is a nine-year-old fourth grader from Cambodia. She lives in Kampot province with her parents and two younger siblings. Her parents support the family by working in the nearby rice fields and taking odd jobs in the off-season. At school, Nisa likes math and Khmer. At home, she loves playing with her siblings, drawing, and eating chicken wings.
Three years ago, Nisa had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the eardrum, in her Right ear to perforate. For this reason, Nisa experiences pain, ear discharge, and hearing loss. She cannot communicate clearly with others, and her family regularly spends money at the pharmacy on medications that only ease her discomfort temporarily.
Nisa traveled to our medical partner’s care center to receive treatment. On June 18th, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her Right ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $363 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care.
Nisa’s mom shared, “I hope my daughter can have improved hearing and do well in school.”

For the past three years, Nisa had been dealing with persistent ear discharge and difficulty hearing, and her parents could not afford the cost of surgery. A visit to specialists at the Children’s Surgical Centre confirmed a perforation in her eardrum caused by chronic ear infections. She required a myringoplasty—surgery to repair the hole and restore her hearing. The surgery went smoothly. In the recovery room, the surgeon explained to her mother that the eardrum had been patched with a small piece of tissue and that Nisa needed to avoid getting water in her ears or blowing her nose for several weeks. After spending a night in the pediatric ward, she and her mother returned to their village with antibiotics and instructions for follow-up care. Nisa has a bright future ahead; she aspires to study hard and become a teacher someday. Providing her with the tools to communicate effectively will greatly benefit her.
Nisa’s mother shared, “I am relieved that Nisa’s hearing will return and she can return to school. Thank you for the free care you give to Cambodian children.”
