Many is a 16-year-old student from Cambodia. He lives in Prey Veng province with his mother and his five-year-old sister. His parents are divorced, and his mother works in a clothing factory to support the family. Many is in grade eight, and his sister is currently in kindergarten. In school, he is passionate about Khmer literature and aspires to become a teacher one day. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer with his friends and eating fried eggs.
Three months ago, Many fell and dislocated his right elbow while playing football with his friends. He visited the provincial clinic, where they recommended surgery, but his mother could not afford the cost. Instead, he used Khmer traditional medicine, using herbs to try to ease his pain. His elbow remains stiff and swollen, causing pain, especially when he carries heavy objects. It limits the movement of his right arm, making it difficult to perform daily tasks comfortably.
Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, can help. On July 16th, Many will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $600. This surgery will prevent chronic dislocation of his elbow. Many will be able to use his arm without limitation, including carrying things and participating in physical activities like football.
Many said, “I hope I can use my arm like before and play football again with my friends.”
