Yaquelin is a 19-month-old girl from rural Guatemala. She lives with her parents and brother in the country’s highlands. She loves to eat her fruits and vegetables, and she spends time playing with her doll and her brother’s toy car.
Yaquelin has been diagnosed with malnutrition. In the short term, this means that her growth is stunted and her immune system is weak, leaving her vulnerable to illness. If left untreated, she will also face long-term consequences, such as increased risk of chronic disease, low brain function, and a higher likelihood of dropping out of school.
Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is requesting $492 to cover the cost of food and supplements, as well as regular visits from community health workers. Yaquelin is scheduled to begin treatment on May 15 through our medical partner’s care center, Clinic Tecpán. With growth monitoring as well as micronutrient and food supplements, Yaquelin will recover, gain weight, and grow taller, catching up with other children her age.
“I am thankful to the donors and to be in the program, for it is of great help for my daughter,” Yaquelin’s mother says. “I am ready to do all that is necessary for my daughter to recover from malnutrition and get healthy.”
