Rachel is an active and social 12-year-old girl from Kenya. Despite her challenges, she remains hopeful and optimistic about her future. Rachel is currently in Grade 7, but has paused her studies due to her medical condition. Two days after Rachel was born, her mother noticed that Rachel's head was enlarging and that her eyes appeared sunken. Rachel was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. Rachel underwent shunt insertion surgery to drain the excess fluid, but the shunt failed within days. Rachel and her mother then journeyed 130 kilometers to our medical partner's care center, BethanyKids Kijabe Hospital. There, Rachel underwent a successful shunt revision surgery, and her mother’s joy was beyond words. They returned home, and life improved significantly. Unfortunately, hydrocephalus shunts can become blocked over time, making revision surgeries necessary. Rachel has had two more surgeries at three and seven years of age. She now requires another shunt revision surgery, so that she can resume her daily activities like other children her age. Without surgery, Rachel will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $719 to cover the cost of surgery for Rachel that will treat her hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on February 13th and will drain the excess fluid from Rachel's brain. Rachel shares, "I am in pain, I haven't been able to go to school. I want to get better so that I can continue learning. I look forward to leaving the hospital feeling better so that I can go home, play with my siblings, and attend school."

Chanthy is a 57-year-old mother of four from Cambodia. She has been divorced since 1996 and has four children, all of whom are married and live in nearby villages. She lives with her eldest child, who works as a high school teacher. In her free time, she enjoys planting vegetables and looking after her grandchild. In May 2026, Chanthy sustained a fracture-dislocation of her right hip in a motor vehicle accident. She was a passenger on a motorcycle when it collided with a car, causing her to be thrown from the vehicle and injure her right hip. The injury has caused significant pain and difficulty with movement. She is unable to walk normally and struggles to perform daily activities independently, making her reliant on family members for assistance. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On June 11th, Chanthy will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will realign and stabilize her hip, helping to relieve pain, restore mobility, and improve her ability to walk and perform daily activities independently. She can contribute $100, but needs help raising $500 more to fund her procedure and care. Chanthy stated, “After the surgery, I hope that my pain will be relieved and that I will be able to move and walk again. I hope to regain my independence and return to my normal daily activities.”

Adson is 74 years old and lives in a village in rural Lilongwe, Malawi. He is married, and all seven of his children are grown and living with their own families. At home, he lives with his wife and two grandchildren, relying on small-scale farming to feed them. Three months ago, Adson was involved in an accident at home. While moving around his yard, he stepped onto a sharp stick used to tie a goat, and it pierced through the flesh of his right foot. As he tried to free himself, fragments of the stick remained in the wound, leaving him in severe pain. He sought care and underwent a debridement procedure to remove damaged tissue, but the injury has taken time to heal. He has been attending follow-up clinics, and recently, doctors advised that he needs skin graft surgery to properly close the wound and restore function to his foot. Without this procedure, healing may remain slow and incomplete, making it difficult for him to walk and continue his daily activities. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Adson receive treatment. On May 6th, he will undergo a skin graft procedure to aid in the healing of his foot, so he can walk again. Adson is contributing to his treatment but needs to raise an additional $295 to fund the procedure. He says: "My wish is for my foot to heal, so I can walk again and continue looking after my home. I have tried what I can, but I do not have enough. I am asking for help so that I can get this treatment and be well again.”
