“I always feel like my throat is very dry, and I’ve lost [my] appetite,” says Jeannot, a 48-year-old business man who lives with his wife and four children in Haiti.
Jeannot has nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a type of cancer that affects the tissues of the head and neck. For Jeannot, the cancer caused swollen and tender masses on both sides of his neck, making it difficult for Jeannot to eat and drink.
“Jeannot needs radiation therapy in the Dominican Republic for three weeks in order to complete the treatment he received,” explains our medical partner, Project Medishare. Jeannot completed chemotherapy to shrink the neck masses and began radiation therapy, but he could not continue treatment due to lack of money and had to return to Haiti.
The sole provider for his family, Jeannot has a shop where he sells glasses, classic watches, and radios. After he became ill, thieves broke into his shop and stole all of his inventory, leaving him unable to support his family or pay for the radiation therapy.
$1500 pays for the remaining radiation therapy that Jeannot needs as well as travel, lodging, and food for the three weeks that he will be in the Dominican Republic for treatment. Project Medishare expects that, after treatment, Jeannot will be “fine, cured” and can “go back to his activities.”
