Phoeung is a retired rice farmer from Cambodia. He and his wife are from Kompong Cham province and they have three sons, three daughters, and ten grandchildren. They live alone in a traditional Khmer stilted house and are financially supported by their children, who farm the ancestral land. At home, Phoeung likes to listen to the monks pray on the radio. He also goes to the pagoda when he can. A few months ago, the retina of Phoeung's right eye detached, causing him complete blindness. This can happen when fluid builds up behind the retina of the eye. The fluid pushes the retina away from the tissue behind it. Common causes include leaking blood vessels and swelling because of conditions such as an injury, inflammation, or age-related macular degeneration. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Phoeung learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On June 7th, eye surgeons will perform a retinal detachment repair procedure in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Phoeung is able to contribute $250 but needs help in raising $399 more to fund this procedure. Phoeung shared, "I hope after surgery my eye can see better and I can go outside and take care of myself well."

Dorothy is a farmer from Uganda. She is married with two children. She farms for a living, growing food crops for home consumption and selling the surplus to generate an income for the family. Her husband is employed in the boda-boda motorcycle taxi business. In 2022, Dorothy gave birth to her third child who was stillborn. She is currently expecting and doctors recommend that she deliver via a caesarean section because of a high-risk pregnancy. This way, doctors can ensure the safety of both mother and child. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Dorothy undergo a caesarian section on May 15th. This procedure will cost $252 and Dorothy needs your support. Dorothy says, “I kindly request that you have mercy on me. Help me with my delivery because I don't know where else I can get money to pay for my surgery.”

Vireak Both is an 18-year-old senior in high school from Cambodia. He lives with his mother and two younger siblings. His mother works as a cleaner in a nearby commercial building, and his younger siblings attend elementary school. In his free time, Vireak Both enjoys playing soccer with his friends and watching Cambodian dramas. Since birth, Vireak Both has presented with preauricular sinus skin pits on both sides of his ear. Due to this condition, he has recently been experiencing pain, swelling, redness, and frequent pus in his right ear. If the cyst is not removed, it could cause worrisome problems like infections or more cysts forming due to trapped bacteria. Vireak Both traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On June 5th, surgeons at Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), will remove the mass. Vireak Both's family is able to raise $50 toward his care and needs help to raise $223 more to fund this procedure. Vireak Both shared that he hopes the cyst will be removed so he can focus on his studies and not have to worry about it growing in size anymore.
