What kinds of symptoms do patients experience before receiving treatment?

Patients will have a raised, sore lump below the skin.

What is the impact on patients’ lives of living with these conditions?

Cysts can cause pain and discomfort based on their location and size. They vary in size and can be found in various locations below the surface of the skin.

What cultural or regional factors affect the treatment of these conditions?

Cysts are quite common in Malawi, though there is no specific regional significance.

  • Process
  • Impact on patient's life
  • Risks and side-effects
  • Accessibility
  • Alternatives

What does the treatment process look like?

A small incision is made, and the cyst is revealed and removed. Sutures are used to close the incision.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

Patients can experience a decrease in pain and discomfort in the location of the cyst. They can also experience improved self esteem due to a return to near pre-cyst appearance.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

Infection and/or excessive bleeding are side effects of any surgery that could occur in cyst removal. There is also a chance for the cyst to regrow.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

Occasionally, health centers in Malawi will perform cyst removals, but it depends on the level of the training of clinicians and availability of supplies. Many patients live with cysts until there is an opportunity, like a visiting surgeon, to treat through cyst removal.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

Occasionally cysts will occasionally disappear on their own. If they do not, surgical intervention is the only option.
