Chheun is a 66-year-old tailor from Cambodia. She has three sons and three daughters, and she relaxes by watching Indian dramas on television.
One year ago, Chheun developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision, tearing, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Chheun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On February 27th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $425 procedure.
“I hope that I will be able to help look after my grandchildren again and can continue my job as a tailor,” Chheun shared.

Chheun underwent cataract surgery.
Chheun’s surgery was smooth and successful. Overall, Chheun’s visual acuity has improved so she can see clearly again in both eyes, and she and her family have now returned to their village.
Chheun was provided with prescription eye drops to make sure her eye heals properly, which she is recommended to apply 8 times per day. Her niece is very happy that Chheun can see things clearly again and she can easily go back and work or go places on her own.
“I am so glad I am able to see everything clearly again after my surgery. I can recognize everyone’s faces, and can continue my work as a tailor. I can go anywhere I want again,” she said.
