Visal is a five-year-old boy from Cambodia. He lives with his parents, older sister, and grandmother. Visal's father is a construction worker, while his mother is a garment factory worker. His grandmother stays at home to care for him while his parents work. Visal's parents hope that he can go to school soon. His favorite meal is fried chicken and vegetables. At home, Visal enjoys spending his free time playing soccer with his friends in the village. Since birth, Visal has been unable to fully extend his fingers as they are fixed in a bent position. This condition is making it difficult for him to grasp objects or use his hand comfortably. His parents are worried he will have difficulty when he starts school. Fortunately, our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, can help. Visal is scheduled for contracture release surgery on April 22nd. Visal's family is able to contribute $100 but still needs $387 to fund this procedure. Visal's mother said, “I hope Visal can use his hand before he starts school."

Daliya is a single mother of 4 children. She farms and does some daily work when available to support her living. Daliya likes chatting with her mother and enjoys eating a local favorite called nsima served with pumpkin leaves. In 2016, Daliya started experiencing a feeling of heat on her left breast followed by a small lump that initially was not painful. Later in the year, she visited several nearby hospitals, but was not able to find any answers. In 2018, her lump grew and had become painful. Daliya visited Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), where she was diagnosed with cancer. So far, Daliya has received 4 cycles of chemotherapy. Lately, Daliya has been experiencing needle-pricking pains, backache, and chest and abdominal pains. This has affected her ability to work. On February 2nd, Daliya reported to Partners in Hope Medical Center (PIH) where it was confirmed she will need a modified radical mastectomy. Dailya and her mother were able to pay $29.88 towards her treatment and need our help raising $1,194 to cover her care, which is scheduled for February 6th. Daliya believes that the surgical operation will help her get back home to join her family and continue supporting her children. She believes her children are the reason she lives and has to be in good health for their sake as a single mother. Daliya said, ‘Kindly help me to get better for me to go back home, my children need my support for them to go back to school.”

In September 2023, Visal suffered a burn injury from hot water on his right finger. Now, burn scar contractures have developed, tightening the 2nd and 3rd fingers of his right hand. It is difficult for him to grab objects, and limits the function of his hand. When Visal's family learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), they traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On April 25th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help him use his hand easily again. Visal's family is able to contribute $100 but needs help to raise $395 more to fund this procedure. Visal's father shared, "I hope my son will be able to use his hand easily again and have no problems in the future."
