Roth is a 66-year-old retired rice farmer from Battambong province in Cambodia. She is widow and has three sons, three daughters and five grandchildren. She lives with her oldest daughter who is a rice farmer. Roth enjoys cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and listening to the monks pray on the local radio station.
Several months ago, Roth developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurred vision, tearing and difficulty in keeping balance, especially in low or bright light. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own.
When Roth learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for five hours seeking treatment. On November 7th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Roth and her family are able to contribute $100 towards the cost of her treatment and need help raising $153 more to fund the procedure.
Roth says: “I hope that after surgery, my eye will be able to see clearly, allowing me to visit the pagoda without worrying about it.”
