Nich is a nine-year-old girl from Cambodia. She lives with her parents and her 12-year-old brother in Kampong Chhnang province. Her mother works in a garment factory, while her father is a rice farmer who also raises cows. She is currently in grade four and loves studying Khmer. She aspires to become a nurse when she grows up. Her favorite meals include pork and vegetable soup, apples, and strawberries. At home, she enjoys helping with cooking and cleaning dishes.
When Nich was just a few weeks old, she received an injection in her left thigh, which led to swelling and stiffness in her knee. Although she underwent surgery at age four for limited knee flex at another hospital, she is still unable to straighten it fully. She limps and has difficulty sitting in class or riding a bicycle.
When Nich learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On January 21st, surgeons at CSC will perform a quadricepsplasty procedure on her left quadriceps to release the tight muscles and tendons that currently limit her leg’s movement. This will help improve her knee mobility and allow her to straighten her leg. Now, Nich needs help to fund this $482 procedure.
Nich shared: “I want to return to school to study with my classmates and play with them after school.”
