Khoeun is a 61-year-old widow and rice farmer. She lives by herself since her husband died several years ago. In her free time, she likes to visit her local pagoda and listen to the monks pray.
Several years ago, Khoeun developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her night blindness, tearing, and photophobia. Now it is difficult for her to work in the rice fields because she cannot see the plants well.
When Khoeun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On December 14th, doctors will perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
“I hope I can see well again after my operation. I want to visit the pagoda by myself, and not be afraid to stumble. I want to plant rice to make money to feed myself better.”

Khoeun underwent eye surgery so she can see well again.
Doing household tasks had become very difficult for Khoeun so she was happy she took the advice of a villager she knows and had cataract surgery to improve her eyesight. Now she is resting for several days and applying medicated eye drops to ensure her eye heals properly. The medical team shared that her eye will feel a bit dry for the first few days, but her sight will gradually get better. Her family feels her life will improve now because she can be more independent and help outside in the rice fields.
Khoeun said: “My poor vision made it harder to see and live my life. I was not happy and did not feel useful to my community. Now I can go outside and visit with neighbors, so I feel content. Thank you to the CSC staff and the donors who paid for me to have my surgery.”
