Sokha is a 25-year-old construction worker from Cambodia. He lives in Kandal province with his wife and one-year-old son. Sokha worked at a construction site before his accident, and his wife works in a garment factory to support the family. In his free time, he enjoys watching the news, and spending time with his son.
Six months ago, Sokha was in a traffic accident that caused a left upper brachial plexus injury. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He is unable to lift his left arm and sometimes experiences pain, which affects his ability to work and care for his child.
Sokha traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, to receive treatment. This is the only center in the whole country where this treatment is available. On October 16th, with the help of our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he will be able to use his arm again. Sokha can contribute $37.50, but needs help to raise $700 to fund his procedure and care.
Sokha said: “After the surgery I want to return to my work to support my family and be able to look after my son more easily.”

Sokha was referred to the CSC by another hospital due to limited specialty care in his province. He underwent nerve transfer surgery to repair the damaged nerves in his left arm, which should help restore both movement and sensation over time. While resting in the hospital, he kept his arm covered with a protective dressing and will begin rehabilitative exercises with the physiotherapy team to strengthen his arm and shoulder. Although Sokha has been unable to perform basic daily activities because of his injury, he remains hopeful that he will regain some movement and sensation to care for his family. The surgeons are optimistic that he will develop new nerve pathways to compensate for the damage. Sokha also hopes to find a job to earn an income to support his family and assist with daily activities at home, especially caring for his young son.
Sokha and his family expressed deep gratitude toward the medical team at CSC, saying: “The doctors and nurses were caring and gave us confidence throughout the treatment process.”
