Scovia is 58 years old and a mother of nine from Uganda. When she was 10, she lost both of her parents within a short period, leaving her and her siblings to be raised by their grandmother. She and her husband depend on farming as the family’s main source of livelihood. They primarily grow food crops such as beans, maize, and potatoes for household consumption and sell any surplus produce to generate income for her family’s needs. Twenty years ago, Scovia began to experience troubling symptoms, including a swelling at the front of her neck. Because the swelling grew slowly and was not painful, she did not initially seek medical attention. However, about a month ago, she began experiencing shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, and increasing breathing difficulties. Concerned about her worsening condition, she sought medical care at a nearby hospital where she was diagnosed with a goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the gland located in front of your neck and produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for functions such as metabolism, growth, and other bodily functions. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Scovia receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on November 2nd. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $252, and she and her family need help raising money. Scovia says, “This has never been painful, but recently, I couldn’t breathe. Am always catching my breath and can’t do anything about it because of limited finances. I kindly appeal to you for support to have my surgery so I can continue farming and keep my children in school.”

Ximena is a 10-year-old student from Colombia. She is a loving, caring, cheerful, and respectful girl who is dedicated to her studies and loves spending time with family and friends. When she grows up, she wants to be a teacher because she likes helping others succeed in their studies. Ximena has had an epigastric hernia, or a protrusion of tissue in her upper abdominal area, for many years. This condition causes pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, especially during physical exertion, which limits daily activities and has affected her quality of life. Fortunately, our medical partner Clinica Noel can help. On July 28th, Ximena will undergo hernia repair surgery, and she and her family are asking for help to raise $1,005 to fund Ximena's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow her to live more comfortably. Ximena's parents shared, "Thank you so very much for your generous help and for donating these funds for my daughter’s surgery. Nuth is a three-year-old girl from Cambodia. She lives with her parents, who are cashew farmers, and an older sister who is in Grade 2. She enjoys playing with toys with her sister and likes fish sour soup and fried chicken. In December 2023, when she was eight months old, Nuth was accidentally burned by a fire on a cashew farm. She was initially treated with dressings and follow-up care, but after the burn healed, scar tissue formed around her right wrist, causing a contracture. This has limited her wrist's movement and has made it harder for her to use her right hand. When Nuth's family learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, they traveled for seven hours seeking treatment. On September 16th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to loosen the tight scar around her right wrist and help improve her wrist movement, making it easier for her to use her right hand as she grows and plays. Now, Nuth's family needs help to fund this $652 procedure. Her mother said, “I hope the surgery will loosen the scar around my daughter’s wrist so she can move her hand more freely. She is still very young, and I want her to grow up able to use both hands comfortably when she plays, learns, and does things for herself.”
